Abstract
A study was conducted on opinion expressions favoured by 40 document examiners of seven nations. Whilst 10% of workers declared only identification, elimination or inconclusive opinions, the remainder were prepared to give qualified opinions. Of these, the minority used probability in a mathematical sense whilst the majority preferred ordinary English language. The most popular expressions for qualified opinions were “probable” and “highly probable”. These two types of qualified opinion, ordinary English language and probability expressions, have been analysed critically. Finally, an eleven-points numerical ‘opinion scale’ is suggested as a tentative a solution.
