Abstract
In this paper, studies on the identification of Chinese handwriting using statistical analytical techniques are reported. Twenty-five Chinese characters were selected, each of which was characterised by one or more of four measurable parameters: width/height ratio, symmetry factor, tilt and slant. Handwriting specimens were collected from twenty-one subjects. Various methods of discriminant analysis were used to investigate the problem and particular attention was given to the discriminating ability of the four parameters. While the “nearest-neighbour” method reported an unsatisfactory recognition rate, linear discriminant analysis was found to be able to reclassify six unknown samples to their original writers.
