Abstract
An exploration of neurosurgical care reveals the pivotal role of specialized nursing services. As neurosurgical advancements accelerate, specialized care in areas, like brain tumor surgery, neurovascular surgery, spinal surgery, functional surgery, head injury surgery, endovascular intervention, and radiosurgery, becomes imperative. These complex procedures necessitate an integrated planning approach, encompassing implant and patient preparation and education. The expansion of specialty nursing services is critical to ensure smooth care continuity, with these services acting as the central communication hub among multidisciplinary care teams. This coordination centers on patient progress, treatment adherence, and the incorporation of patient viewpoints in discharge and rehabilitation planning. The recent initiation of Hong Kong’s premier specialty nursing service in neurosurgery illustrates the benefits and challenges of including expanded nursing services in specialized care settings. The amplified role of the specialty nursing team in providing electrophysiological monitoring, transcranial doppler monitoring, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is also detailed. Active involvement in grand rounds and treatment meetings is crucial for fostering interdisciplinary cooperation and enhancing service quality for patients and their families. By critically evaluating specialty nursing services’ expansion and impact within neurosurgical settings, this chapter provides valuable insights for institutions aiming to improve their neurosurgical care. The broader implications contribute to the academic discourse on improving patient outcomes in neurosurgery, emphasizing comprehensive and all-encompassing care.
