Abstract
This paper explores the purpose, nature and meaning of parenthood in the cultural context of Hong Kong and examines the meaning of parent education in the Hong Kong-Chinese context. A qualitative study approach was used to explore the experiences and views of parent education service providers and service recipients. Eighteen focus group sessions were conducted (7 with services providers, 8 with service recipients and 3 with concerned academics, representatives of professional bodies and policy makers) with 137 participants from schools and social welfare agencies. Based on the responses of the participants, the author attempts to analyse contemporary parenting practices and to develop a culturally relevant parent education within the cultural context of Hong Kong.
