Abstract
Statistical studies into certain measurable parameters of a number of selected Chinese characters written by 438 subjects were conducted with the objective of establishing general principles useful for handwriting examination. These parameters of width/height ratio, symmetry factor, slant and tilt are recognised as important features fundamental to the examination of questioned Chinese script. Hypotheses with respect to writing movements, writing habits and character structures, which can account for the experimental observations, are put forward. An attempt has also been made to derive a relationship between certain important features of Chinese and Latinised language systems.
